Note: Martin Qualls
Birth Date: October 22, 1818
Place: Overton Co,Tennessee
Death Date: November 29, 1858
Place: Carroll Co., or Madison Co., Arkansas
The following information on Martin Qualls was written in part by his
great great grandson John Philip Qualls, 6860 Tahiti Drive, Cypress,
California, 90630, in his genealogy of his father Paul Wissman Qualls
(February 9, 1909 - July 9, 1988). Phil's work is dated December 26,
1996 and is in the collections of the Carroll County Historical
Society Genealogical Library, Berryville, Arkansas. I am deeply
indebted to Phil for his generosity in sharing his wealth of
information and fruits of his years of research on the extended Qualls
families. (GBG)

Documentation has not yet been found to show who Martin's father was.
Current evidence points toward James but it may have been Robert.
Further research may discover who his father was and identify his
siblings. (Note: There are a number of Qualls descendants who believe
that Martin's father was Robert. Phil Qualls tends to the belief that
Martin's father was James. However neither point of view is backed up
with documentation. For purposes of this preliminary family history,
the role of Martin's father is assigned to Robert Qualls, based solely
on the information contained in the books "Qualls Cousins," and
"Carroll County Families."
However, naming conventions in use at the time Martin and his wife
Mary Ledbetter were having children would seem to indicate that
Martin's father was James. One naming tradition in frequent use was:
1st son = father's father; 2nd son = mother's father; 3rd son 2 CONT father; 1st daughter = mother's mother; 2nd daughter = father's
mother; 3rd daughter = mother. Martin and Mary named their first son
James and their first daughter Martha. They would seem to have been
following the above tradition at least as far as naming their first
daughter after the mother's mother. Mary Ledbetter's mother was Martha
"Patsey" Chesser.
As of this writing, I am researching a recently discovered lead
indicating that Martin Qualls moved from Osage, Carroll Co., AR, to
Piney Township, Madison Co., AR sometime around 1850 or 1851. Martin
Qualls is listed in the Madison Co. tax rolls in 1851 and may have
inherited a farm from his father about that time. I am now researching
documents and sources at the Madison County Genealogical Society
Library in an attempt to clarify this question. However, the question
may never be resolved. Many records at the Madison County Courthouse
that might have answered the question were destroyed in two major
fires. The Madison County Genealogical Society has some records that
were apparently duplicates of records that were destroyed. But
research is ongoing. George B. Griffin 10.12.98)
The following information was extracted from the book "Qualls Cousins"
by Mrs. John T. Curtis of Tularosa, new Mexico.
"Apparently Martin was among the earliest of the Eastern Tennessee
Qualls to move to Arkansas. He showed up on the 1845 tax list of
Carroll County, Arkansas. His daughter stated she was born in Carroll
County Arkansas in 1843.
"His reports to his kin in east Tennessee must have been complimentary
of the Arkansas area for we find his father, Robert, and other Qualls
families following him to Arkansas by 1848. Martin lived in Carroll
County until his death in 1858. He was a neighbor to James B. (James'
son) and Nathan Jr. in Osage Township. His widow had moved nearer her
father-in-law (Robert) by the 1860 Madison County, Arkansas Census.
"At this time it has not been documented that Martin Qualls was in
fact Robert's son. The relationship was claimed from circumstantial
evidence. There are some descendants who think that the older James
Qualls residing in Madison County, Arkansas in 1850 may have been
Martin's father. Paul W. Qualls Dec. 2, 1996)
"The 1820 Tennessee Census (when Martin was 3 years old) shows an
Elizabeth Quales who may have been the wife of James Quarles who died
in 1817 (Wilson County); Abner Qualls (Robertson County); Moses Qualls
(Humphreys County); Richard Qualls (Robertson County); Ann Quarles
(Overton County); Benjamin Quarles (Franklin County); Jeremiah Quarles
(Franklin County); John Quarles (Overton County); Mary "Polly"
Quarles, wife of Roger Quarles, who died in 1817, (Wilson County);
Randal Quarles, William Quarles (Overton County); William Quarles
(Warren Co.) a William T. Quarles (Wilson County), and William Quarls
(Lincoln County). It is not known if any of these famlies were related
to Martin but if one is it is most likely one of the Overton County
families.
"The 1830 census (when Martin was 13 years old) of Overton County
Tennessee shows no Qualls but does have Ann Quarles, Archabald
Quarles, James Quarles, John Quarles and two William Quarles. One of
them may have been Martin Qualls' family. There were the following
families in other counties which may have been related to Martin. Knox
County: John Quales, David Qualls. Anderson County: Abram Qualls.
Jefferson County: Betsey Qualls, John Qualls. Rhea County: Hubert
Qualls. Roane County: Nathaniel Qualls. Hamilton County: Two James
Qualls, William Qualls.
Martin is shown in the list of Volunteers to the Tennessee Militia in
1837. He served in Captain Henry S. Maxwell's company, which was
ordered into service of the United States by Governor Newton Cannon
from 18 June 1836 to 18 June 1837. Martin was apparently enrolled in
Livingston in Overton County by Captain Maxwell and served for a
period of six months to possibly one year. It is interesting to note
that William D. Officer and William A. Officer who lived close to the
Qualls also served in the same company and that Martin and William D.
Officer later married Ledbetter sisters and migrated to Arkansas
together.
This information is from Peggy Hermann & Esther Truax.
Martin married Mary Ledbetter in Sept of 1838 and they had their first
child, James W. Qualls, in 1839.
The 1840 census of Overton county Tennessee shows Martin "Quailes" age
20-30, (he was 22 at that time) and a female age 20-30 who must have
been Mary Ledbetter Qualls and one male child under 5 years old who
must have been James W. Qualls, their first son. It also shows
William Quailes, Nathan Quailes, George Quailes, James C. Officer,
Willliam A. Officer (with whom he served in the militia) and several
of the Ledbetter families as neighbors. Apparently Quailes was another
spelling version of Qualls at that time.
The 1850 census of Carroll County Arkansas shows Martin (age 32),
2 CONT Mary (31), James W. (12), Martha S. (10), William J. (8),
Margaret A. (6), Mary J. (3), John J. (1) and Matthew H. (5/12). They
were family number 259 in Osage Township. It states that Martin was a
farmer and could read and write but that Mary could not read or write.
It says the first three children were born in Tennessee and the last
four were born in Arkansas.
This would indicate that between William Jasper's birth in November of
1841 and Margaret Ann's birth in March of 1843 that Martin and Polly
moved from Overton County Tennessee to Carroll County Arkansas. Most
likely they moved to Arkansas during the spring or summer of 1842.
In the 1860 census of Madison county Arkansas Martin was not listed
with his family since he had died in 1858. The family was listed as
number 962 in Piney Township. The census showed Mary (age 44), James
W. (21), Wm. J. (18), Margaret A. (17), Mary A. (13), John T. (11),
Matty H. (10), A.B. (8-son), Sarah E. (6), Robert H. (5), and Thomas
B. 2. It says that Mary, James B. and Wm, J. were farmers.
Family 963 was Mary's sister Martha (Ledbetter) Officer, with her
family, minus her husband William D. Officer (William D. Officer
served with Martin in the Tennessee militia). Martin is said to have
died in November of 1858 just about 3 weeks after his last son,
Thomas Benton was born.
Martin's wife Mary Ledbetter Qualls next shows up in the 1870 census
in Lawrence County, Missouri along with their children.
In the 1880 census Mary and two of her children were boarders in the
home of William Wilson in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
n the 1900 census Mary was in Lawrence County, Missouri.

library in Berryville. It is published by the Carroll County

Qualls, Martin and Mary A. (Ledbetter)
Some of the historic families of Carroll County, Arkansas, did not
amass famous names or reputations, because of the positions they held
in life. Yet those self-same families became associated with many
other Carroll County families because of the marriages of their
descendants and that, too, is a part of our heritage.
Martin Qualls was born Oct 22, 1815 in the State of Tennessee, a son
of Robert and Elizabeth Qualls. Robert had been born about 1794 in
Henry County, Virginia, as a son of John and Jerusha (Ferris) Qualls.
Robert had made his way into White county Tennessee by 1825. When the
Federal Census of 1840 was taken for Bledsoe County, Tennessee, he was
living there, and 10 years later we find him in Kings River Township
of Madison County, Arkansas. By 1860 he had moved into Prairie
Township of Carroll County, Arkansas. How many of those moves Martin
Qualls made with his father is not known, however he was united in
marriage with Mary A. "Polly" Ledbetter on September Sept 26, 1816,
(Note: this date is in error, it is Mary's birth date) in Franklin
County, Tennessee, who was a daughter of Washington and Martha "Patsy"
(Chesser) Ledbetter. The Federal Census of 1850 for Carroll County,
Arkansas, enumerated Martin and Polly Qualls in Osage Township.
Eight years later Martin Qualls died on November 29, 1858. After her
husbands' death, Polly moved into Madison County, Arkansas, where she
was living when the 1860 census was taken. Then in 1880 she and two of
her children were boarders in the home of Wm. Wilson in Eureka
Springs, Arkansas.
Mary A. "Polly" (Ledbetter) Qualls departed this life on March 11,
1901, in Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri (April 12, 1905 is correct
date: note by George B. Griffin) and she was interred in the Aurora
Cemetery. Yet even in death Martin and Polly left a tremendous legacy
behind in the person of their 12 children, and several of those
children became linked to the unique history of Carroll County,
Arkansas, by their marriages. Those 12 children were as follows:
1. James W. "Jim" Qualls who was born July 10, 1839, in Overton
2 CONT County Tennessee, was united in marriage with Martha E. Officer
about 1843, Probably in Madison County, Arkansas, and became the
father of 6 children.
2. Martha S. Qualls, who was born Aug 2, 1840, in Overton County,
2 CONT Tennessee, was united in marriage with first, Pleasant J. Hall,
a son of Thomas and Lourenia Hall whose family history will be found
in this volume, and second to Vardman Ivy, and became the mother of 4
children by her first marriage.
3. William Jasper Qualls who was born Nov. 2, 1841, in Overton
County, Tennessee, was united in marriage with Lucinda Lasley on Aug.
23, 1866, in Lawrence County, Missouri, became the father of 11
children and died Dec. 30, 1899, in Crane, Missouri, and was interred
in the Old Town Cemetery in Crane.
4. Margaret Ann Qualls who was born March 29, 1843, in Carroll
County, Arkansas, and was united in marriage with George Washington
Rogers, a son of James Vance and Elizabeth (Birkes) Rogers (see the
Birkes family histories in this vol. for more information on this
family).
5. Louise Jane Qualls who was born May 7, 1844, in Carroll County,
Arkansas, and died prior to 1850.
6. Mary Adeline Qualls who was born Dec. 11, 1846, in Carroll County,
Arkansas, was united in marriage with a man named (Fountain A.) Hudson
and became the mother of 3 children. (There actually were six: Fred,
Ed, Mary Jane, Louetta, Charles, and Odus aka Otis. Note by George B.
Griffin.)
7. John Y. Qualls who was born Sept. 11 1848, in Carroll County,
Arkansas, and no further information on him is available.
8. Matthew Holford Qualls who was born Feb. 3 1850, in Carroll
County, Arkansas and was united in marriage with Mary Carolyn Culton,
a daughter of James W. Culton, became the father of 12 children and
died June 27, 1936, in Crane, Stone County, Missouri and was interred
in the Mars Hill Cemetery SW of Crane.
9. Alfred Bradley Qualls who was born Nov. 22, 1851 in Carroll
County, Arkansas, was united in marriage with Mary Elizabeth
Ledbetter, a daughter of the Rev. Arthur and Elizabeth (Ogle)
Ledbetter and died May 15, 1929 in Dallas, Texas. No information about
his children is available.
10. Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Qualls who was born May 15, 1854 in
Carroll County, Arkansas, and was united in marriage with Albert
Furry.
11. Robert Hickman Qualls who was born July 5, 1856, in Carroll
County, Arkansas, and was united in marriage with Isabel Blackburn
Burney, became the father of 6 children, and died Sept. 9, 1928, in
Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri and was interred in the Maple Park
Cemetery in Aurora.
12. Thomas Benton Qualls who was born Nov. 5, 1857, in Carroll
County, Arkansas, was united in marriage with a young woman named
(Elizabeth) Hudson who was the sister of his sister's, Mary A. Qualls
Hudson's husband.
According to family tradition, Benton Qualls disappeared for about 3
years and no one knew where he was. Then he came in one night
wearing a brand new suit and a detective's badge and he was very sick.
He died a week later of Pneumonia fever.
